Many producers spend far too little time looking after the legal aspects of their productions. Therefore, they often have to painfully learn that a film project cannot be published unless all necessary rights of use and licenses are secured. Without the necessary permissions they cannot have their own projects, a really unpleasant situation.
Be it literary characters, recordings of persons, brands, artistic or architectural objects, photos, film material or music recordings from third parties – a user license is always required for use in new productions. The question of what I can show without permission is not always easy to answer. In addition, the different regulations of the respective countries in which the recordings of objects are made apply.
For example, buildings or properties can be seen on the drone or aerial photographs that are so popular today. These photographs may not be shown in Germany and in many other countries without permission of the respective owners. Photographs taken from public roads or paths are permitted in Germany without permission, but not in some other countries.
